The “Filimbi” citizen movement reacted strongly to the tragic event which took place in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on August 30. The Congolese armed forces perpetrated carnage against followers of the mystical-religious sect “Wazalendo”, causing the death of fifty civilians.
The national coordinator of Filimbi, Mino Bopomi, expressed his deep dismay at this violence exercised by the security services supposed to protect the civilian population. He denounced the impunity from which certain military officials seem to benefit, recalling that General Constant Ndima, governor and commander of military operations in North Kivu, was already involved in similar acts during the “Erase the Picture” operation there. is twenty-three years old. He therefore called for all those responsible to be brought to justice in order to put an end to the impunity plaguing the country.
The government’s reactions also angered Filimbi. By describing this carnage as “a slippage that can happen anywhere”, the members of the government have, according to the citizen movement, demonstrated great irresponsibility. Filimbi thus underlined the importance of breaking with the culture of impunity and ensuring that the perpetrators of such acts answer for their crimes before justice.
This latest tragic event is added to the long list of violence which is plaguing the Democratic Republic of Congo. Insecurity and population displacement are worrying issues, as evidenced by the articles recently published on the Fatshimetrie blog. The involvement of civil society, embodied by movements like Filimbi, plays an essential role in denouncing these injustices and demanding justice for the victims.
It is crucial that the international community pays sustained attention to the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and encourages the Congolese authorities to take concrete measures to end impunity and protect the civilian population. The ultimate objective is to allow the country to regain the stability, security and peace to which it legitimately aspires.
