“The tragedy continues in Mali: a series of terrorist attacks causes the death of 64 people”

Terrorist attacks in Mali continue to wreak havoc in the country. Recently, two tragic incidents shook the north of the country, causing the deaths of a total of 64 people, including 49 civilians and 15 soldiers. The government, dominated by the military, declared a three-day national mourning in tribute to the victims.

The attacks were carried out separately, targeting a passenger boat on the Niger River and an army base in Bamba, in the Gao region. Although the government statement did not specify the number of people killed in each attack, it said the provisional death toll was 49 civilians and 15 military personnel.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group to Support Islam and Muslims (GSIM) claimed responsibility for the attack in Bamba. This information was relayed by the government itself, which also stated that the attack on the boat had caused injuries and material damage. The army reacted quickly and managed to neutralize around fifty terrorists.

This new tragedy comes after the GSIM had already imposed a blockade on Timbuktu in early August. The security situation in the city is worrying, especially since the UN mission in Mali (Minusma) recently left two camps near Timbuktu, Ber and Goundam, now under the control of the Malian authorities. This takeover led to clashes with jihadists, as well as with ex-Tuareg rebels.

It is important to note that the violence in Mali is not only limited to this country, but also spreads to neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Niger. Terrorist groups continue to sow terror in the region, causing numerous deaths and leaving entire populations in distress.

The three-day national mourning decreed by the Malian government is a testimony of solidarity with the victims and their families. It is essential to join forces to fight terrorism and guarantee security and stability in the region. Support from the international community is crucial to help affected countries face this growing threat.

We must remain attentive to the evolving situation in Mali and continue to support efforts to end the violence and bring peace to the region. The fight against terrorism is a complex challenge, but we must not lose hope and work together to build a better future for all.
