Free maternity in the DRC: between social progress and controversy

Free maternity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): a fiery debate

Head of State Félix Tshisekedi recently announced the formalization of free maternity in the DRC. This measure, which will first be tested in Kinshasa before extending to the entire country, aims to relieve families who previously had to bear significant expenses related to maternity. However, this controversial decision drew mixed reactions from Kinshasa residents.

Some hail free maternity as a real social advance. For these people, this measure will allow parents, particularly those with limited income, to be able to welcome their children in adequate conditions, without having to worry about the heavy medical costs linked to birth. However, they also highlight the need to put in place effective care for pregnant women, ensuring that difficult births and cesarean sections, for example, will also be included in this free service.

Others express their dissatisfaction with this measure, believing that it should not be the priority of the government. They say rather than focusing on free maternity care, authorities should first tackle more pressing social issues, such as improving education and lowering food prices. They also express their fear about the impact of this free service on population growth, fearing overcrowding of the country if the measure is misused by irresponsible people.

Despite these differences of opinion, it is important to highlight the measures taken by the government to support free maternity. At least 320 health centers and 50 general referral hospitals have been designated to participate in this program. In addition, organizations such as the Regulatory and Control Authority for Universal Health Coverage, the Health Solidarity Fund, the Health Promotion Fund and the National Agency for Clinical and Digital Engineering of the healthcare have been created to ensure adequate care.

In conclusion, free maternity in the DRC arouses divergent opinions among the inhabitants of Kinshasa. While some see this measure as a social advance that will provide relief to families with limited incomes, others believe that more pressing problems need to be resolved. It remains to be seen how this measure will be implemented and what the real impacts on the Congolese population will be.
