“Fight against terrorism and humanitarian support: the determination of the Malian army in Timbuktu”

The airstrikes carried out by the Malian army near Timbuktu on September 6, 2023 testify to the country’s determination to fight against the terrorist groups raging in the region. This operation aims to destroy equipment used to make homemade bombs and to recover ammunition, in an effort to weaken the jihadist forces.

Alongside these strikes, the Malian authorities are also carrying out food distributions in the Timbuktu region. This initiative aims to support the inhabitants, who are suffering from the consequences of the blockade imposed by the Jnim jihadists for a month. The supply difficulties and the rise in the prices of certain foodstuffs are placing a heavy burden on the local population.

Despite these actions, the Malian authorities continue to deny the very existence of the blockade. They rather describe the situation as an “exacerbation of security incidents”, thus refusing to recognize the gravity of the situation. However, the testimonies of the inhabitants and the communications of the Jnim confirm that the blockade is well in place and that it continues to affect the daily life of the inhabitants of Timbuktu.

The transitional Prime Minister, Choguel Maïga, recently received a delegation of nationals from the Timbuktu region. Although efforts have been made to find solutions, no concrete announcements have been made to end this blockade. This situation raises questions about the real will of the Malian government to resolve this crisis and support the affected populations.

In conclusion, the airstrikes and food distributions carried out by the Malian army in Timbuktu reflect the continuous efforts to fight against terrorist groups and mitigate the effects of the blockade. However, it is essential that the Malian authorities recognize the reality of the situation and take concrete measures to end this blockade and fully support the people of Timbuktu in this difficult period.
