“Historic visit: The President of Burundi strengthens ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo”

The President of the Republic of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, is currently on an official visit to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was hosted by his Congolese counterpart, Felix Tshisekedi, for a series of meetings and discussions aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.

During his visit, Presidents Ndayishimiye and Tshisekedi had a tete-a-tete at the Palais de la Nation, followed by the signing of a military agreement between the two countries. This agreement follows the deployment last March of Burundian troops on Congolese soil, in accordance with the directives of the East African Community, in order to face the threat posed by the armed group M23 and other armed groups. In the region. This demonstrates the will of the two countries to strengthen security along their common border and to fight together against the negative forces that destabilize the region.

It should be recalled that relations between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Burundi have improved considerably since President Tshisekedi came to power. The two heads of state signed several cooperation agreements, including one on the construction of a railway linking Bujumbura to Kindu, via Bukavu and Kamituga. This essential infrastructure will promote trade and connectivity between the two countries.

In addition to military and economic cooperation, the two countries expressed their willingness to pacify their borders and jointly fight against negative forces that threaten regional stability. President Ndayishimiye even called on Burundian negative forces, such as the National Liberation Forces (FNL) and the Resistance Movement for the Rule of Law (RED-Tabara), to return to the country and contribute to stabilization efforts in Democratic Republic of Congo.

This official visit and the agreements signed strengthen the ties between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo and testify to the commitment of the two countries to work together for the security and development of the region.
