“Land conflict in Ituri: clashes between Nyatsa and Avodro villages leave 12 dead, a call for pacification of the region”

Clashes between residents of Nyatsa and Avodro villages in Luu chiefdom, Ituri, continue to cause casualties. According to the latest statistics, the toll has risen from seven to twelve dead, including seven men in uniform. This internal customary conflict is at the origin of a land dispute dating from 2015, which had already caused several victims.

Faced with this worrying situation, the notables of the region call on the two parties to favor peaceful means to resolve their differences. They also denounce the hijacking of the conflict by those they label as enemies of peace.

The traditional authorities of Aru ask the military administration to strengthen the mechanisms for securing civilians and to initiate meetings to promote peaceful cohabitation in the region. This request is all the more urgent as the province of Ituri has been under a state of siege since May 2021 with the aim of fighting against armed groups and restoring the authority of the State.

Unfortunately, despite the efforts made, armed groups such as the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODEC) continue to perpetrate massacres against civilians and thus aggravate the already precarious security situation in the region.

It is essential to find lasting solutions to these land disputes and to strengthen security measures to protect local populations. Peaceful coexistence and peaceful resolution of disputes are essential to guarantee peace and security in the Ituri region.
