Reforestation, a solution for the environment and food in Senegal

Senegal, a country located in West Africa, faces many environmental and food challenges. This is why a reforestation operation has been launched in the regions of Ziguinchor, Sédhiou and Kolda, in Casamance. This initiative aims to plant 50,000 oil palm trees in 1,500 villages, in order to promote local food and fight against deforestation.

The idea of ​​this operation was born from the desire of the Ministry of Agriculture to promote food security in Senegal. Indeed, the country is highly dependent on imports of refined palm oil, which represents a significant expenditure for the national economy. Thus, by planting these oil palms, the Senegalese authorities hope to reduce this dependence and encourage local production.

To carry out this project, Haidar El Ali, former Senegalese Minister of the Environment and large planter, was chosen to lead it. The variety of oil palms chosen for this operation is not genetically modified, which allows populations not to depend on seed suppliers. In addition, each hectare of these palm trees will produce up to 4 tons of oil, thus ensuring sufficient production to meet local needs.

But this reforestation operation is not limited only to the planting of oil palms. Indeed, in the regions of Sédhiou and Kolda, large areas have been deforested in the past to cultivate groundnuts. These deforested areas will also be reforested with fruit species, thus forming food forests. This will not only diversify the diet of local populations, but also restore the ecosystem.

Reforestation therefore represents a solution for both the environment and food in Senegal. By promoting the local production of palm oil and reforesting deforested areas, the country will be able to reduce its dependence on imports and improve the food security of its population. This operation is a great demonstration of the importance of agroforestry and the preservation of natural resources to ensure a sustainable future
