“Emergency at Goma airport: the unmarked runway endangers flight safety”

Goma airport, located in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing a major security problem. In fact, the airport runway is not marked, which makes night landings particularly dangerous. To remedy this situation, the Airways Authority (RVA) has identified a funding need of $300,000.

The Chairman of the RVA Board of Directors, Triphon Kin-Kiey Mulumba, stressed the urgency of resolving this problem within the next ten days. According to him, the RVA has the necessary funds to carry out the track marking work. This is a top priority to ensure flight safety at Goma airport.

During his recent mission to other airports in the country, Kin-Kiey Mulumba observed that several airport infrastructures in the hinterland are facing similar problems. In particular, he noted difficulties linked to equipment, infrastructure and the degradation of the tracks.

At Loano airport in Lubumbashi, reception capacity is insufficient to meet the needs of passengers. The situation is similar at Kalemie airport, capital of Tanganyika province. However, Kin-Kiey Mulumba noted with satisfaction the work underway at Bangboka airport in Kisangani, which will allow the DRC to have a quality international terminal in the near future.

This backcountry tour was the first for the RVA PCA. Accompanied by the Deputy Director General of the RVA, Dieudonné Mayaya, he visited the airports of Loano, Kolwezi, Kalemie, Goma and Bangboka in order to learn about the problems facing these infrastructures and to identify the measures to be taken to resolve them .

It is essential to invest in improving airport infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure flight safety and promote the country’s economic development. The marking of the Goma airport runway is a crucial step in this direction, and it is necessary to mobilize the necessary funds as soon as possible.

Congolese authorities, in collaboration with the RVA and international partners, must work together to strengthen the capacity of the country’s airport infrastructure, in order to meet the growing needs of the aviation sector and promote regional integration and economic development
