“Kabila’s return to politics: Congolese demand an apology and justice”

The return to the political scene of the former President of the Republic Joseph Kabila Kabange has stirred up the Congolese people. Reunited with the few executives of his political formation who have remained “faithful” in his farm in Kingakati, in Kinshasa, Kabila has promised to address the Congolese nation in the coming days.

Yet, for my part, it is high time for Kabila to apologize to the Congolese people for the numerous human rights violations, political and economic crimes perpetrated during his reign. The Congolese have not forgotten past atrocities and on the contrary, they fiercely castigate the current political maneuvers, embodied by President Félix Tshisekedi.

Kabila is responsible for the current situation in the country. He is the architect of the “African compromise”, which allowed a mystical and preposterous transfer of power, by dismissing the will expressed by the Congolese people at the ballot box. He naively thought he was controlling power but now finds himself paying the price.

The judgment of history will be severe towards those who do not deserve any consideration and commiseration and it has little to say in sense to the Congolese. The Congolese people have been cheated and will no longer accept being the victim of the political game exercised at their expense. While current President Félix Tshisekedi is trying to install more responsible governance in the country, the return of Joseph Kabila to the political scene does not seem to be seen as a step forward, on the contrary.

Nevertheless, it is important to closely follow the news in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly in terms of economic policies, the fight against urban crime, war displacements and the humanitarian situation in the face of serious floods affecting certain parts of the country.
