Djugu: The resumption of military operations to put an end to the killings of civilians.

Since 2017, the territory of Djugu in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been facing an armed conflict, initiated by the CODECO militia. Despite the establishment of a state of siege in May 2021, the military actions carried out against the militiamen came to a sudden halt, in particular because of accusations of “disproportionate use of forces” and “collateral damage” caused during the operations.

This is how Lieutenant-General Luboya N’Kashama spoke to the press last Tuesday to announce the resumption of military operations against the militiamen who are mourning the province of Djugu. In addition to the use of artillery, helicopters should once again be used.

The governor of the province justified this decision by pointing out that the militiamen, in particular CODECO, continue to kill civilians despite the agreements signed. ADF rebels on the side of Irumu and Mambasa are also a threat.

Lieutenant-General Luboya N’Kashama recalled that “we took the national and international community to witness. You blamed us…we stopped and this is what is happening, we are going to resume? Yes resume”.

This decision to resume military operations is essential to put an end to the killings of civilians that have been taking place for years in the province of Djugu. The population is eagerly awaiting concrete results that could improve their situation and guarantee their safety.
