“Closing of the parliamentary session in the DRC: significant progress despite political tensions”

The March session of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo closed on Thursday, June 15, after three months of parliamentary work. Various legislative matters were dealt with and several laws were passed, marking significant progress for the country. On this occasion, the president of the lower house of parliament, Christophe Mboso, sent a message to his fellow national deputies, congratulating them for the work accomplished and encouraging them to present their results to their respective bases.

Despite the political tension in the DRC, President Mboso underscored the responsibility of MPs to serve the nation with dignity and earn the trust of the Congolese people by carrying out their constitutional missions to legislate and oversee.

Indeed, the legislative elections are looming on the horizon and each deputy will have to submit his candidacy file in order to obtain the renewal of the confidence of his voters. The Independent National Electoral Commission has pledged to ensure inclusiveness during the elections despite ongoing political difficulties, while the Congolese opposition has shown resolve to defend fair elections despite government repression.

On the economic side, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of cooperation between sectors, particularly between the mining sector and the agricultural sector, to encourage the development of the latter and thus stimulate the emergence of the Congolese middle class. And while the digital code is making significant progress, regulations to control subcontracting in the DRC could further encourage the emergence of this middle class.

Despite the challenges that stand in its way, the DRC is gradually moving forward on the path of progress and democracy, which is encouraging for its future. The weeks and months to come will be decisive and will certainly impact the future of the country.
