The DRC in discussions with the UN Assistant Secretary for Peacekeeping on the withdrawal of MONUSCO
The Congolese authorities participated in a constructive meeting with the United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary for Peacekeeping, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, to discuss the planned withdrawal of the UN Mission in the DRC (Monusco) in six months. The two parties discussed the objectives of the activities of the armed groups, while allowing the State to strengthen its position in the region.
The withdrawal of Monusco represents a historic step for the DRC, according to the Congolese authorities, and the two parties are currently working on an effective transition. The government has been committed since November 15, 2022 to developing a withdrawal plan after the unfortunate events that have affected the country in recent months. Several meetings were held around the President of the Republic to discuss this withdrawal plan with Monusco, including to shorten the deadline.
The Congolese government has set itself the central objective of ensuring security and stability in the region, while guaranteeing a smooth transition with Monusco. The country is committed to developing a stronger state presence in anticipation of the withdrawal of this peacekeeping force, while fighting against the armed groups active in the region.
This withdrawal will come soon after the arrival of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in January 2022, which aims to stabilize the political situation in the Central African Republic. Discussions on the planning for the withdrawal of Monusco continue in a productive manner and the Congolese authorities remain fully engaged in this historic transition process.
