Rebel incursion and fierce fighting in the Tibesti gold region

Hot news from Tibesti: A rebel foray into the gold region

Chad’s Tibesti gold region was the scene of a brief rebel incursion last week, followed by heavy fighting with the army. This area, renowned for its numerous traffics, is often the site of conflicts between armed groups not signatories to the Doha peace agreement, which regularly launch attacks from southern Libya.

This rebel incursion occurs while the head of state is absent, which has led to the strengthening of the security apparatus in the capital, Ndjamena. The objective of this mobilization is to galvanize the troops and strengthen the military presence in the Tibesti region.

Details of the rebel attack remain unclear, with conflicting reports from the rebels and the government. According to the rebels, the attack would have taken prisoners and killed, while the government has not communicated an official toll.

At the same time, the Front for Alternation and Concord in Chad (FACT), responsible for the offensive which cost the life of President Idriss Déby, affirms that its base was bombed, causing several victims. The rebel group also denounces the preparation of a Chadian offensive against its bases in Libya. However, the Ministry of Defense calls these statements propaganda. Despite this, FACT announces the unilateral breaking of the ceasefire declared in April 2021.

These events come at a crucial time for Chad, four months from the constitutional referendum scheduled for December 2023, and just over a year from the presidential elections. Against the backdrop of these unrest in the Tibesti region, political rivalries and ethnic tensions continue to weigh on the stability of the country.

In this precarious context, the security situation remains a major concern for the Chadian authorities who have to deal with rebel attacks and illicit trafficking which fuel tensions in the region. Closer regional and international cooperation is needed to resolve these issues and ensure Chad’s security and stability.
