“South Korea: $250,000 in aid for victims of the Kalehe mudslide in South Kivu”

Article on South Korea’s aid to mudslide victims in Kalehe, South Kivu

On May 4, one of the provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Kivu, was hit by mudslides, causing the destruction of several villages including that of Bushushu and Nyamukubi, leaving 438 dead and more than 5,000 missing. Faced with this situation, the government of the Republic of Korea has granted financial assistance to UNICEF of 250,000 US dollars to help the victims.

This aid aims to meet the most urgent needs of the communities of Kalehe, in particular access to drinking water and life-saving medicines. Water, hygiene, sanitation and non-food item kits are also provided as part of this aid.

The representative of UNICEF in the Democratic Republic of Congo expressed his gratitude to the government of the Republic of Korea for this aid which will be of great use to the victims. The day after this tragedy, the humanitarian coordinator, Bruno Lemarquis allocated emergency aid of 3 million dollars from the Humanitarian Fund in the DRC for an immediate reaction.

All those of goodwill were called upon to mobilize to help the victims and respond to the urgency of the situation. This aid from South Korea thus reinforces the initiatives already taken
