The worrying state of the security and humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
is a source of concern for the international community. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres recently presented a report to the United Nations Security Council, in which he noted a deterioration of the situation in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.
In these regions, there is a growing presence of militias and armed groups, which control a large part of the territories. These groups, such as the CODECO, Zaire, FPIC, FRPI and ADF militias, continue to terrorize civilians. Their main motivation seems to be the control of gold mining areas, which further aggravates the situation.
The report also highlights the proliferation of armed vigilante groups, known as Wazalendo, which add an additional dimension of violence and instability to the region. Antonio Guterres expresses concern about the possibility of further violence emerging, including ethnic attacks.
In North Kivu, the rebel group M23 took control of vast territories, establishing parallel administrations and exercising de facto power. Arbitrary arrests and extrajudicial executions are also reported, further heightening tensions in the region.
The report also highlights tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, aggravated by FDLR/FOCA attacks against M23. These tensions could potentially open a second front in South Kivu, with devastating consequences for the region.
Faced with this alarming situation, it is imperative for the international community to take concrete measures to support the DRC in its efforts to restore peace and security in the region. The commitment of MONUSCO, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC, must be strengthened and its capacities must be increased in order to be able to respond effectively to the current challenges.
The situation in the DRC requires sustained attention and concerted action by the international community. It is essential to work together to guarantee the safety of civilians, end the impunity of armed groups and create the conditions conducive to sustainable development and lasting peace in the region
