“DRC: Security challenges jeopardize the peace and stability of the country”

The multifaceted challenges of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continue to weigh heavily on the country’s security and humanitarian situation. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, recently presented an alarming report on the deterioration of the situation in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

In Ituri, national and foreign armed groups and militias occupy more than 70% of the territories of Irumu and Djugu. These groups include the CODECO, Zaire, FPIC, FRPI and ADF militias, which continue to terrorize civilians. In addition to violence against populations, these groups are also motivated by the control of gold mining areas, thus exacerbating tensions and territorial rivalries.

In the province of North Kivu, the M23, a rebel group, took control of vast territories, setting up parallel administrations and committing extrajudicial executions. This armed presence seriously disrupts the lives of local populations, who suffer arbitrary arrests and human rights violations on a recurring basis.

The report also raises growing concern over the proliferation of armed vigilante groups, known as Wazalendo. These groups create a climate of tension and could trigger new violence, including ethnic attacks, further weakening the already precarious situation in these regions.

Furthermore, the attacks attributed to the FDLR/FOCA against the M23 act as a catalyst for tensions between the DRC and Rwanda. The report also mentions an intensification of contacts between the M23 and the Twighaneho group in Minembwe, risking to trigger a new round of hostilities in North Kivu and potentially to open a front in South Kivu.

Faced with these security challenges, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) must rethink its strategy and adapt its configuration in order to face the current challenges. The objective is to strengthen the protection of civilian populations and help restore lasting peace in the country.

The situation in the DRC remains complex and requires constant attention from the international community to support efforts to establish lasting peace, protect civilians and prevent any escalation of violence. The DRC needs a comprehensive approach that combines security, political and social solutions to enable the country’s development and bring lasting stability to its inhabitants.

Thus, it is essential that national and international actors work together to find lasting solutions to the challenges plaguing the DRC. Only a united and coordinated commitment can create the conditions conducive to peace and prosperity for all Congolese
