“Deadly violence in Tripoli in Libya: fighting between militias leave 55 dead and 146 injured”

The violent fighting that broke out in Tripoli, Libya on August 14 and 15, 2023 claimed many victims and plunged the Libyan capital into insecurity. According to information reported by the spokesman of the Emergency Medical Center, Malek Mersit, the toll stands at 55 dead and 146 injured. It should be noted that these figures could change in the coming days.

The clashes pitted two armed groups, the 444 Brigade and the al-Radaa Force, which are vying for power and influence in the region. The fighting mainly affected the Souk el Jomaa district, located in the southern suburbs of Tripoli, and forced many families to flee their homes.

This violence occurs in a context of rivalry between the various Libyan militias seeking to extend their influence and power. Despite attempts by transitional governments to disarm these armed groups and integrate them into state security forces, the militias continue to clash regularly.

The UN, as well as the European Union and the embassies of some European countries in Tripoli, have condemned the violence and called for an immediate ceasefire. There is an urgent need to find a lasting political solution to end the growing instability in Libya.

Calm seems to have returned to Tripoli thanks to an agreement reached between the government and the Social Council of the Souk al Jomaa district for the release of Colonel Mahmoud Hamza, head of Brigade 444. However, the tension remains palpable and it is essential to maintain constant vigilance to avoid a resumption of fighting.

In this context, it is important to highlight the dramatic consequences of these clashes on the civilian population. Hundreds of families have been forced to flee and many lives have been disrupted. It is essential that the international community support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Libya, in order to guarantee the safety of civilians and enable the country’s sustainable development
