DRC: Signs of progress despite major challenges

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, recently carried out his first working mission in the province of North Kivu. The objective of his visit was to send a message of support to the people of North Kivu, calling on them to support the country’s institutions, in particular the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo which fight against armed groups.

However, this visit came as the province is in the grip of war against the M23, supported by the Rwandan government, in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and part of Nyiragongo. Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch have recently called for international action to stop the war crimes taking place in the DRC.

At the same time, the critical health situation in the DRC is hampering blood donations, aggravating an already difficult situation in the country. Militant groups, such as REPOP, have also sprung up to try to change Congolese politics and gain power, while tackling plastic pollution in Butembo.

Finally, tension is also rising in Kamako in the DRC, following a dangerous communal conflict. Despite the challenges the country faces, cultural groups, such as Kipfumu Bwenge Muisha, continue to perform for peace and social cohesion.

In sum, the DRC is currently facing several major challenges, but there are signs of hope thanks to positive local initiatives. However, greater international action is needed to help solve the DRC’s problems, such as human rights abuses and armed conflict.
