Historic summit: Felix Tshisekedi joins the signatory countries of the Amazon Pact

On August 8, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, participated in the summit of the 8 signatory states of the Amazon Pact, which was held in Belém Do Para, Brazil. A meeting of capital importance in a context where the climate crisis is becoming a global problem.

The Amazon Pact brings together Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela and now the DRC. These countries have decided to unite to speak with one voice and develop a common agenda aimed at preserving and safeguarding the forest resources of their territories.

Félix Tshisekedi was invited by his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva, to represent the DRC as head of state of a leading country in the Congo Basin. The latter is one of the three major forest basins on the planet, alongside Brazil and Indonesia.

Félix Tshisekedi’s participation in this summit is of paramount importance for the DRC. Indeed, the country is home to exceptional biodiversity and has a large area of ​​tropical forests. Partnering with the countries of the Amazon will allow the DRC to actively contribute to the preservation of this unique natural heritage.

By joining the Amazon Pact, the DRC undertakes to take concrete measures to combat deforestation, promote sustainable management of forest resources and raise public awareness of the importance of preserving the environment. This membership also strengthens the position of the DRC in international climate negotiations.

Félix Tshisekedi’s participation in this summit was welcomed by many Congolese civil society actors. Ève Bazaiba Masudi, Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, underlines the importance of this meeting for raising awareness of environmental protection in the DRC. Luc Lutala, expert in the field of the environment, highlights the opportunities that such membership can bring in terms of funding and international cooperation. Alain-Parfait Ngulungu, associate researcher in climate governance, insists on the importance of collective action in the fight against climate change.
