The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced on Monday, June 26, 2023 the start of the voter identification and registration operation in the territory of Kwamouth in the province of Mai-Ndombe. This operation, which will last 15 days, will end on July 10.
In a press release, the CENI specified that 109,442 voters are expected and that to facilitate this operation, the number of registration centers will increase from 52 to 130 and the number of registration kits per registration center will increase from 1 to 4. .
The territory of Kwamouth had not been able to benefit from the enrollment operation due to the prevailing insecurity. Indeed, the region was in the throes of a bloody war between the Teke and Yaka. However, the identification and enrollment process was made possible thanks to efforts to restore peace and security.
It is important to emphasize that other territories such as Masisi, Rutshuru and part of Nyiragongo remain under occupation by the M23 rebellion, and are therefore in a situation of insecurity.
This CENI operation is a significant step forward in the electoral process in the DRC, which tends to strengthen the mechanisms of democracy.
