“Novak Djokovic: the new master of Roland-Garros and the history of tennis”

Roland-Garros 2023 came to an end this Sunday, June 11 with Novak Djokovic’s victory over Casper Ruud. The Serb thus won his 23rd Grand Slam title, surpassing Rafael Nadal and setting a new men’s record. The victory also marks Djokovic’s third consecutive success at Roland Garros, making him the tournament’s most successful player.

Norway’s Casper Ruud, ranked fourth in the world, failed to overcome Djokovic, who became the oldest player to win the Paris tournament at the age of 36. Djokovic also becomes the first player in history to have won each of the four Grand Slam tournaments three or more times.

In addition to this new achievement, Djokovic becomes world number one again, a position he occupies for the 388th week, another record. Djokovic is now one length away from Margaret Court’s absolute record, set in the 1960s and 1970s.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal was keen to congratulate Djokovic on the “incredible achievement” on Twitter, pointing out that the record 23 Major titles seemed impossible a few years ago.

Tennis will long remain synonymous with the hegemony of three players: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The latter continues to break records, and one wonders now if he can surpass the number of Grand Slam titles of Federer and Nadal.
