The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recently experienced a milestone in the issuance of national identity cards, with the official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) and the National Identification Office of Population (ONIP) and National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Since 1984, the country had no longer carried out a scientific census of its population, making it difficult to identify its citizens. With the transfer of enrollment devices, cartographic data and collection equipment by the CENI, ONIP and the INS can now continue the identification and general census operations of the population, thus allowing the forthcoming issue of national identity cards for the Congolese.
The communication unit of the electoral center stressed that this progress has been long awaited by the population and the government, with the leadership of the President of the Republic in the realization of this project.
Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde presided over the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding and encouraged all stakeholders to redouble their efforts to complete the process and achieve the assigned objectives. CENI President Denis Kadima hailed the Prime Minister’s determination and underlined the importance of pooling in the success of this project.
In short, this progress represents a giant step for the Congolese, who will now be able to obtain a national identity card and participate actively in the economic and political life of their country.
