The city of Beni, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is plagued by growing insecurity. The accusations of the commander of the Congolese National Police (PNC), Kahuma Sébastien, against the animators of the small territorial recently appointed by the Head of State, provoked strong reactions within the political class.
The Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) reacted strongly to these comments, which it describes as irresponsible and inappropriate. The newly appointed animators at the head of the small territorial Beni are mostly members of this political party. Bernard Kambale, spokesperson for the UDPS and member of the newly appointed animators, described this accusation as “an alibi to escape responsibility and a reserve for taking legal action”.
For the UDPS, this accusation is an attack on the Head of State and his government, who are seeking to restore peace in the region. The party thus asks the commander of the PNC to prove his accusations by presenting tangible elements to justify his statements.
This controversy comes at a time when insecurity persists in the Beni region, raising fears of an escalation of political violence in the DRC. Several kidnappings were reported and armed men illegally occupied the residence of Moïse Katumbi, a politician fearing for his safety.
Faced with this worrying situation, the international community is also concerned about the stabilization of the DRC in anticipation of the electoral deadlines. The EU thus discussed with the DRC ambassador to Benelux and to the EU, the security situation and the electoral process in the DRC.
At the same time, the DRC is looking for solutions to revive its economy, particularly in agriculture with the launch of a program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business, and in identification with the upcoming issue of national identity cards. .
The DRC therefore faces many challenges, between the fight against insecurity and economic recovery, in a complex political context where the stability of the country is put to the test.
