Insecurity persists on the Kwamouth-Masiambio road axis: what solutions for a lasting peace?

Insecurity persists on the Kwamouth-Masiambio road axis in Kwamouth territory. The presence of Mobondo militiamen since June 2022 and the collection of taxes from returned residents could create an area of instability. Civil society in the region has warned that the attackers continue to hunt down people who pass on this road, and that they begin to sell and impose their law on local farmers.

According to local representatives, the restoration of peace on this axis depends on the commitment of the Congolese armed forces (FARDC). Recent operations on the river axis have shown that the placement of soldiers in several villages has made it possible to restore peace and resume traffic.

However, the search for lasting peace must also go through the establishment of new local governance mechanisms. With this in mind, it is important that the Congolese authorities find an effective response to the installation of traditional authorities by the Mobondo militiamen.

In addition, the security situation in the region should not overshadow the need to put in place public policies to revitalize agriculture, a vital sector for local populations. The DRC has thus launched a new agri-food program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business, which should make it possible to improve food security in the region.

In short, the situation remains complex on the Kwamouth-Masiambio road axis, but the mobilization for the armed forces and the establishment of a new local governance could allow a significant improvement.
