“Human trafficking is on the rise in Gungu, DRC: the shocking story of a young trafficker arrested in the company of five children”

Human trafficking is a scourge that is growing in Gungu, a town in Kwilu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Authorities arrested a suspected child thief and trafficker along with five children between the ages of five and eight that he had stolen from Kikwit. The children were deceived with the promise to go and buy maize together and be paid. The young man admits to having been involved in this traffic for some time, and he intended to take them to Angola. Officials reminded parents to watch over their children.

This situation is far from isolated in Gungu and other parts of the DRC. On several occasions, press releases for the search for lost children are broadcast by Kikwit community radios. The authorities must take measures to put an end to these criminal practices. Raising awareness and supporting efforts to find and release abducted children is crucial.

The initiatives taken to combat human trafficking are essential. Most of the victims are vulnerable and marginalized children, often from poor families and with little access to education. It is important that governmental and non-governmental organizations work together to provide livelihoods for struggling families and put in place effective strategies to protect children from these unscrupulous predators.
