“Fifteen people killed in a rebel attack in the DRC, plunging the education sector into a stalemate”

Even today, blood has flowed in the Rwenzori sector, in North Kivu of the DRC. The ADF rebels continue to harm the civilian population despite the military operations carried out in the region for four years. Between Wednesday and Friday, the assailants killed 15 people, including four women, five men and four children in Bukokoma village near Nzenga Kasusu, as well as three people in Kalivula and Kyandengi.

This situation had unfortunate consequences for the education sector, which was severely disrupted. Schools were forced to close, plunging the region into a stalemate.

According to the declarations of Meleki Mulala, the local civil society coordinator, this attack constitutes revenge by the ADF against the army, which had won a victory during the last joint operations with the UPDF elements in the chiefdom of Bashu. Mulala fears that the violence will escalate and urges the FARDC to redouble their efforts to protect the civilian population.

The conflict in the troubled areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is far from resolved. The rebels continue to attack the civilian population despite the initiatives taken to put an end to it. Security remains at risk, and the education sector is severely disrupted. The situation calls for the attention of the international community and requires urgent action to save lives and achieve lasting peace.
