DRC: security, development and environment at the heart of concerns

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been facing security crises for several years, particularly in the province of North Kivu, where local and foreign armed groups, such as the M23 supported by Rwanda, continue to operate and occupy certain territories. Despite the military operations ordered by the President of the Republic and the regional force EACRF, the rebels are still present on the ground and their reinforcement worries the government.

At the same time, the “Mobondo” militia is increasing its incursions into the western part of the DRC, causing tension among the local population. Faced with these threats, the DRC recently obtained the deployment of a force from the Southern African Development Community to restore peace and security in the east of the country.

The security situation remains worrying despite the efforts made by the authorities to deal with it. At the same time, the DRC seeks to promote the economic and social development of the country, particularly in the mining sector, by launching initiatives aimed at promoting digital transformation and the inclusion of women in the mining industry.

However, these efforts face significant challenges, such as violence perpetrated by armed groups, but also corruption and lack of transparency in the mining sector. The recent intrusions by the Republican Guard into the headquarters of a political party in Kinshasa have also highlighted the need to work to consolidate the rule of law.

Despite these challenges, the DRC continues to aspire to a more stable and prosperous future for its people. It is with this in mind that the reintroduction of white rhinos to Garamba National Park was initiated, thanks to a conservation initiative by Barrick Gold Corporation. This symbolic action demonstrates the DRC’s desire to preserve the country’s biodiversity and promote a green and sustainable economy.

Despite the challenges it faces, the DRC displays an unwavering determination to overcome these obstacles and achieve its full potential as a nation.
