The city of Tshikapa, capital of Kasai province, has recently witnessed demonstrations organized by the movement fight for change [LUCHA]. Activists of this movement gathered in Kele, at the 3z roundabout, to protest against the high cost of living, to demand a reduction in the cost of connection to Regideso (from 220 to 320 dollars in Tshikapa) and to point out the lack of drinking water in kele hill.
However, the authorities banned this peaceful march, which led to a police intervention to disperse the demonstrators. LUCHA activists denounced the ineffectiveness of the steps taken with the company ‘Regideso’, and thus chose the ultimate means of exerting pressure: to express their dissatisfaction by taking to the streets.
At the time of this writing, several demonstrators have been arrested and imprisoned in the Kanzala commune police station. Journalists who were there to cover the event were also arrested and their reporting equipment confiscated.
These events were widely commented on social networks, illustrating the importance of continuing to support social movements in the Democratic Republic of Congo
