The general elections in the DRC are fast approaching and the Center d’Etudes Pour l’Action Sociale (CEPAS) has published a report on the concerns and priorities of Congolese citizens. This research aims to contribute to the development of action plans in response to the concerns of the population, particularly in the context of preparing for elections.
The report, which was presented in Kinshasa on June 9, reveals that citizens are mainly concerned about social issues, the economy, education, security and democracy. Politicians are thus invited to take these priorities into account to develop their action programs and better respond to the needs of the population.
CEPAS has been conducting this research since 2021 and involved different actors, including political parties. The results aroused the interest of civil society and the entire Congolese population. However, some candidates are still far from meeting the expectations of the population, sometimes preferring to use gifts rather than offering tangible solutions.
Researcher Christian Moleka believes that it is essential to educate the population to understand the real issues, especially during an election period. Voter education by the CENI, political parties and the media is an important prerequisite, he said. He also stresses that the Congolese people must be demanding because they are primary sovereigns, and that the deputies and ministers work for them.
In sum, the survey conducted by CEPAS reveals the main priorities of Congolese citizens and allows politicians to better respond to their needs. It is time for electoral candidates to take this data into account to develop relevant programs adapted to the real priorities of the population.
