“Armed violence in the DRC: Mining sites targeted, the urgent need to protect populations and investors”

Mambasa province was affected by armed violence overnight from Thursday to Friday. Gunmen carried out an attack on a mining site operated by Chinese expatriates, in the village of Dipo. The exchange of fire caused the death of two police officers and injured three others. Local civil society also said the attackers stole firearms during their attack.

It should be noted that in recent days, several mining sites have been the target of similar armed attacks, causing significant losses for businesses and residents of the region. Gold and silver are the main resources coveted by criminals.

These acts of violence underscore once again the security challenges facing the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the context of social and political unrest, it is essential for the authorities to intervene quickly to protect populations and guarantee the security of businesses that create jobs and contribute to economic growth.

As an editor, it is important to point out that these events have a negative impact on the reputation of the DRC with foreign investors, often discouraging their presence in the country. Nevertheless, there are commendable initiatives, such as the new agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business, which aim to encourage investment and provide opportunities for the Congolese.

The DRC must continue its efforts to improve security in the country, so that acts of violence such as this do not happen again and that foreign investors are encouraged to invest in the country.
