“The return of white rhinos to Garamba Park: hope for biodiversity and tourism in the DRC”

Wildlife tourism is an increasingly popular activity that allows you to discover wildlife in their natural habitat. One of the most renowned wildlife sanctuaries in the DRC, Garamba National Park has just benefited from an ambitious project to restore the region’s endangered population of white rhinos.

After a first successful operation to reintroduce 10 white rhinos on June 9, the local government is confident about the future impact of this initiative on tourism and the preservation of biodiversity. Garamba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupies 20% of the area of Haut-Uélé, near the Sudanese border.

The white rhinoceros relocation program in this region is part of the initiative to protect, promote biodiversity and conserve wildlife advocated by the Canadian company Barrick Gold, as well as its partners African Park and the Congolese Institute. for the conservation of nature (ICCN).

It should be noted that this species had almost been decimated by poachers, as well as by the various wars that the DRC has experienced. The main objective of this initiative is to create a new population group for this endangered species, while increasing the attractiveness of the park for tourists.

It is important to emphasize that the conservation of biodiversity is fundamental for the survival of the planet and is therefore at the heart of global environmental concerns. This initiative is a further step towards the protection of wildlife, but it cannot be fully profitable without improving the region’s tourist infrastructure.

The local government therefore intends to invest in these infrastructures to attract tourists from all over the world, while drawing dividends from its realities proportional to the investment it wants to make here. The reintroduction of white rhinos is an ambitious project, but one that can pay off in the long term for the region and the whole planet.
