Democratic Republic of Congo: summary executions recorded by the UN
The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) in the Democratic Republic of Congo has published its April report on human rights abuses. This report mentions 230 victims of summary executions, including 144 men, 62 women and 24 children. Although this figure remains high, there is however a slight decrease compared to the previous month when there were 353 victims. Armed groups are the main perpetrators of these human rights violations, but the UNJHRO also documents 87 violations committed by State agents, including 18 victims of extrajudicial and summary executions.
At the same time, the UNJHRO recorded a total of 359 human rights violations and abuses throughout the national territory. However, there is an overall improvement compared to March with a reduction of more than 27% in human rights violations and abuses, particularly with regard to the number of victims of extrajudicial and summary executions (-30% ), ill-treatment (-38%), arbitrary arrests and detentions and kidnappings (-45%) and sexual violence (-62%).
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed conflicts have caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in recent years, must continue to sensitize its authorities and armed groups to the need to respect human rights. Reducing human rights abuses is an important first step in providing a peaceful environment for the Congolese population scarred by years of violence
