Survey on the image of women in the Congolese media: a worrying under-representation.

Congolese women journalists conducted a survey of 30 Kinshasa media on the image of women in the media and by the media. This survey was carried out with the collaboration of UNESCO, the International Program for the Development of Communication (IPDC), as well as the International Organization Journalists for Human Rights (JDH/RDC). The results show a low representation of women at the decision-making level, with only 26% of media owners being women.

The study also reveals an under-representation of women in media content, with 25% of women in print companies and 20% in online media. Women journalists are called upon to lead their own battle to ensure that women are more present in media content, and thus better meet the needs of Congolese women.

Faced with the results of this survey, UCOFEM recommends that women in the media do more to increase the visibility of women in and through the media. UNESCO also calls on owners of media companies to promote gender equality in their policies.

In short, this survey constitutes a barometer for measuring the efforts made by the Congolese media for gender mainstreaming, but also for taking into account the leadership of women, both institutionally and in the content of the information disseminated.
