“The UN Under-Secretary-General discusses the security and humanitarian situation in the DRC with the Congolese Prime Minister”

Since June 3, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Organization in charge of peace operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has been on a working visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo. This Tuesday, June 6, he was received in audience by Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde to discuss the worrying security and humanitarian situation in the DRC.

Discussions focused on strengthening state authority through its security, military and police components. The protection of civilians was also considered, with the need to ensure that Monusco accelerates the transition towards a gradual and well-prepared withdrawal so that the State can strengthen its presence and ensure the security of the populations.

The issue of the M23 was also addressed, with the need to prepare pre-cantonment operations. Regional peace processes and the disarmament of armed groups were also discussed.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix also stressed the importance of humanitarian aid for the DRC, which is facing an acute humanitarian crisis, and promised increased support for advocacy with humanitarian agencies and donors.

This working visit is an opportunity for the DRC to strengthen its relations with the UN and to advance peace and security on its territory.
