News: DRC government seeking solutions to decongest cross-border traffic in Kasumbalesa

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is taking steps to address the cross-border traffic congestion problem in Kasumbalesa, Haut-Katanga province. With this in mind, a Congolese delegation, led by Transport Minister Marc Ekila Likombo, went on a mission to South Africa.

During their visit to Pretoria, the Congolese delegation had several working meetings, field visits and the signing of agreements aimed at improving exchanges between the Member States of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). .

One of the results of this mission is the availability of the South African border transport facilitation agency, Cross Border, to share its expertise in the fight against customs fraud. This agency also presented its services relating to the control of goods at import and export, the issuance of driving licenses online, as well as electronic payment.

This mission to South Africa brought together not only the Minister of Transport Marc Ekila, but also the Governor of Haut-Katanga Jacques Kyabula Katwe, as well as representatives of the different transport sectors in the DRC, such as the Freight Management Office multimodal (OGEFREM), the National Railway Company of Congo (SNCC) and Congo Airways.

The objective of this mission is to find innovative solutions to decongest cross-border traffic at Kasumbalesa, a key crossing point between the DRC and South Africa. By improving trade and putting in place more effective control measures, the Congolese government hopes to facilitate trade and travel while reducing waiting times and traffic jams.

This initiative demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to finding pragmatic solutions to solve transport and logistics problems, and to improving trade with its partners in the SADC region.
