Cooperation between the DRC and Belgium: exchanges between the Head of State and Belgian parliamentarians
On June 2, 2023, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, met with a delegation of Belgian parliamentarians to discuss cooperation between their two countries. The delegation was led by Ms. Els Van Hoof. Through this meeting, the parliamentarians spoke of their desire to support the current electoral process as well as their commitment to strengthening Congolese democracy. Issues relating to corruption, the aggression of the DRC by Rwanda via the M23 and the 2023 elections were also discussed.
The delegation of Belgian parliamentarians also visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), where the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Els Van Hoof, reaffirmed their financial and observational support for the ongoing electoral process. The members of the delegation expressed their satisfaction with the explanations provided by the 1st vice-president of the CENI, on the places where people were not enlisted following the insecurity, and the question linked to the non-existence of some registration centers.
This meeting is an encouraging sign of cooperation between the two countries, a rapprochement that could be reflected in their social and economic life in the future. Through this visit, the Belgian parliamentarians showed that they have a deep interest in the political future of the DRC and their aspiration for a continuous improvement of the situation.
