In a context marked by decades of dictatorship, conflict and impunity, the issue of transitional justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is coming back to the fore. Panzi Foundation President Denis Mukwege advocates for a holistic approach to justice, which includes truth, reparations and guarantees of non-recurrence.

Denis Mukwege insists that holistic justice is essential to complete the transition from dictatorship to democracy and from war to peace in the DRC. According to him, only a comprehensive approach to justice will make it possible to reconcile the victims of the mass atrocities committed in the country.

He also points out that the culture of impunity is one of the main obstacles to the establishment of the rule of law in the DRC. Indeed, the Congolese judicial system, poorly equipped and dysfunctional, does not have the necessary means to put an end to impunity and prosecute those responsible for mass crimes.

Faced with this reality, the Panzi Foundation advocates a holistic national strategy for transitional justice in the DRC. This strategy emphasizes the combination of judicial and non-judicial mechanisms, each approach being complementary. She also advocates for institutional reforms to ensure the non-repetition of crimes and strengthen the rule of law.

The debate on transitional justice in the DRC is therefore crucial for the country. It is a question of finding solutions which will make it possible to break with impunity and to establish a true culture of responsibility. By listening to the voices of victims and adopting a holistic approach to justice, the DRC can hope to achieve lasting reconciliation and build a future of peace and stability for all its citizens.
