The Goma-Masisi-Walikale road: a problem with major economic, security and health consequences

The impassability of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road: a problem with multiple consequences

The Goma-Masisi-Walikale road, approximately 250 kilometers long, is currently in an advanced state of impassability. This situation poses many challenges for trade, the supply of foodstuffs and also has consequences in terms of security and health. In a letter sent on August 2 to the military governor of North Kivu, the Walikale Study and Development Office (BEDEWA) expressed its concern on this subject and requested the personal involvement of the governor to restore traffic on this crucial road.

BEDEWA’s Executive Secretary, Patrick Mabutwa, highlighted the importance of this issue in a statement: “The impassability of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road has significant repercussions on the daily lives of the inhabitants of the region. Trade are hampered, food supply becomes complicated and this also affects people’s safety and health.”

The situation of this road is not new. In November 2021, work had been announced to improve its condition. However, this work has been suspended for reasons that have not been communicated to date. This situation is all the more worrying as the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road plays an essential role in the economic development of the region. It connects major urban centers and allows the transport of goods to other areas of the country.

The impassability of this road has a direct impact on the lives of the inhabitants of the region. Traders face difficulties in getting their products to market, which leads to higher prices and lower purchasing power of populations. In addition, food supply needs cannot be fully met, which can lead to malnutrition and health problems.

In terms of security, the impassability of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road opens the door to the actions of armed groups operating in the region. The absence of a constant security presence fosters insecurity and violence, endangering the lives of residents and compromising efforts to stabilize the region.

Faced with this alarming situation, it is necessary that the authorities take concrete measures to restore traffic on this road. This implies the resumption of rehabilitation works as soon as possible and the strengthening of the security presence along this road axis.

It is also necessary to create regular monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of the rehabilitation works and to anticipate possible future problems.. Improving the condition of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road will help boost the economy of the region, improve the living conditions of the inhabitants and strengthen security in this part of the country.

In conclusion, the impassability of the Goma-Masisi-Walikale road is a problem that has significant repercussions on different aspects of the daily life of the inhabitants of the region. It is essential that the authorities take action to restore traffic on this road and to guarantee the safety and well-being of local populations
