“Opposition meeting in the DRC to discuss the contested electoral process and denounce corruption”

Tension is rising in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the forthcoming holding of a popular meeting initiated by opposition leaders. Delly Sesanga, Augustin Matata, Moïse Katumbi and Martin Fayulu signed correspondence inviting the people of Kinshasa to join them in discussing matters of national interest. But above all to make their voices heard concerning the current electoral process which does not seem to them to be in conformity with the constitution and corrupt.

These opposition leaders denounce the opacity of the voter identification and registration operation, the first stage of the electoral process, as well as the politicization of the CENI and the Constitutional Court. For them, it would be impossible to hold honest and impartial elections under these conditions.

If the popular meeting scheduled for June 17 in Kinshasa could be an opportunity for these leaders to better clarify their position regarding their participation or not in the December 2023 elections, recent demonstrations have shown violent police repression and risks of cuts. internet to prevent the mobilization of opponents.

In this context, the people of Kinshasa could once again be taken hostage and find themselves at the heart of political tensions that threaten the stability of the country. It is therefore urgent to find a way out of this political crisis that allows the holding of honest and fair elections, thus guaranteeing the legitimacy of the future governance of the DRC.
