Ituri Province: The Governor makes a strong announcement in view of the fight against armed groups

Fight against armed groups in Ituri: the governor intervenes

The International Criminal Court (ICC) sent its prosecutor Karim Khan to Ituri province for a visit of a few hours. The governor of the region, Lieutenant-General Johnny Luboya N’kashama, took the opportunity to issue an ultimatum to the armed groups operating there. In a strong and blunt speech, the governor promised to end impunity and human rights violations.

He warned the armed groups that continue to commit abuses against the population that national and international justice awaits them. The message is clear: the executioners who thought they were free from any crime must now know that they will be relentlessly hunted down.

Addressing the armed groups, the governor offered the opportunity for a peaceful surrender and to join the Disarmament, Demobilization, Community Recovery and Stabilization (P-DDRCS) program. Otherwise, they would be prosecuted.

The governor also stressed that the passage of the ICC prosecutor was a strong signal to criminals who believed themselves to be safe. He made it clear that military operations would resume for those who refuse to end their violence.

It is hoped that this visit and the measures taken by the governor will help to end this violence and restore peace in the Ituri region.
