“The issue of pollution in mining areas: a major challenge for the DRC”

The issue of environmental pollution in mining areas is a major concern for decision-makers and actors in the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Minister of Mines was invited to a working session with the Senate in order to respond to concerns relating to the implementation of protective measures in favor of the environment.

According to the boss of the mines, mining activities have a significant impact on the environment and lead to the degradation of the ecosystem. Hence the need to put in place guidelines and standards to curb environmental pollution. This involves strict compliance with laws, tolerated thresholds and corrective measures to prevent or limit harmful effects on soil, water and air.

However, the problem arises in the effective implementation of these measures. Environmental pollution must be scientifically demonstrated in order to hold mining companies liable. It is therefore important to carry out serious and transparent investigations to identify the sources of pollution, apply appropriate sanctions and implement repair and mitigation measures.

Thus, the Congolese authorities must put in place rigorous standards for strict monitoring of mining activities. Mining research and the exploitation of mining resources must be undertaken with care to avoid or reduce the negative impacts of mining activities on the environment. The authorities must also raise awareness among players in the mining sector of the environmental consequences of their activities.

In short, the mining sector must be redesigned and organized so that mining activities do not affect the environment. The Democratic Republic of Congo must put in place rigorous measures to maintain a balance between economic prosperity and environmental protection
