Illegal possession of weapons and threat to democracy: Édouard Mwangachuchu before the Military Court

The High Military Court initiated this Friday, June 2, an investigation against the deputy Édouard Mwangachuchu, for illegal possession of weapons and ammunition of war at his home. The Court demanded from the defendant the document attesting to the authorization to carry a firearm for the weapons seized. The deputy, to the great surprise of the Court, instead provided a certificate of registration of the carrying of firearms established by the former Minister of the Interior.

The public prosecutor denounced the lack of special authorization from the Head of State to hold a weapon of war and declared that the authenticity of the permit presented by the deputy is illegal, contrary to the regulations in this matter. The defense lawyer, for his part, attributed the fault to the Ministry of the Interior and not to his client, stressing that the possession of the weapon was not for military purposes, but rather for self-defense .

The debate ended with the referral of the case to Tuesday, June 6. The MP and his co-defendant, Chief Commissioner Robert Mushamalirwa, appear before the Court for their participation in an insurrectionary movement, the illegal possession of weapons and munitions of war, as well as for the incitement of soldiers to commit acts contrary to their duty.
