Fatal accident on Route 5 in the Democratic Republic of Congo: companies must act to improve infrastructure and road safety

The situation of road number 5 in the Democratic Republic of Congo is still alarming despite promises of rehabilitation by Governor Jacques Kyabula Katwe. This again caused a tragic traffic accident on Friday June 2, 2023 near the village of Malambwe, 72 km from Kilwa. A Hiace brand vehicle was involved in this fatal accident, causing 3 victims and several injuries. In addition, the majority of passengers lost their goods and cash.

Among the injured is the prefect of ITM Kilwa, Isidore, whose state of health is very critical. He was evacuated to Lubumbashi to receive appropriate care. The other victims have not yet been identified at this time.

The territory of Pweto, where this accident took place, is one of the most disadvantaged in terms of infrastructure in the province of Haut-Katanga, despite the presence of two major companies that operate there 24 hours a day: AMC (Anvil Mining Congo) and Mushima. However, to date, these companies have made no effort to provide this city with basic infrastructure. The population of this region is thus in a situation of total despair, without any assistance from companies to improve their quality of life.

It is important to emphasize the seriousness of this situation and to recall that tragedies of this kind occur regularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mainly because of the lack of road infrastructure and security checks. It is essential that companies operating in these poor regions take their responsibility and contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the local population.
