DRC: The suspension of Boss Mining because of environmental pollution, revealing a multifaceted crisis.

News in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to punctuate the days of Congolese. This week, the Minister of Mines, Antoinette N’Samba Kalambayi, temporarily suspended all mining activities of Boss Mining for a period of 3 months, following the environmental pollution caused by this company.

Indeed, the environmental situation in the DRC is most worrying: mining pollution has become a real scourge in the country. This suspension will be renewed if nothing is done to stop environmental pollution.

Local populations are the first to suffer as a consequence of this unhealthy environment. This extractive sector must assume its responsibilities vis-à-vis the Congolese population as well as concerning the regulation of their activities. Boss Mining is a mining company located in KAKANDA, former mining site of Gécamines in the District of Lubudi.

Such acts are becoming commonplace in Congolese newspapers, which are trying to sound the alarm to encourage both state institutions and the private sector to act for the protection of the environment.

At the same time, opposition leaders are calling for citizen mobilization before the December 2023 elections, denouncing a government without real steps taken to solve environmental problems, as well as the repression of demonstrators. Respect for human rights in question in the DRC which is a real brake on the development of the country.

However, progress is notable in certain sectors, such as the rehabilitation of the Kinshasa-Matadi Railway to boost the country’s economy, which the population has been waiting for for many years.

In addition, the presence of the DRC on the international scene is also notable with the participation of Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge in the inauguration of President Erdogan, thus strengthening ties with Turkey.

Finally, tragic miscellaneous events always make headlines in Congolese newspapers. The assassination of a former president of civil society in Butuhe, or the terrorist attack in Beni leave the country under tension. The governor of Ituri puts an end to the impunity of armed groups in his region in order to improve the security of the local population.

The DRC thus seems to be going through a complex period, both socially and environmentally and in terms of security. Let’s hope that concrete and effective solutions will be found to get the country out of this difficult situation.
