Assassination of the honorary president of civil society in Butuhe: a new drama in the North Kivu region

On the night of Thursday June 2 to Friday June 3, Kakule Mbalikiriri Moïse Léonard, honorary president of the civil society of Butuhe, was assassinated by armed men. According to several sources, the killers were able to break into his home and shoot him dead. The victim was hit by a bullet in the leg and another in the chest.

The president of the civil society of Butuhe demanded the opening of an investigation to identify the perpetrators of this crime. However, some sources have suggested that this attack could be linked to a land dispute in the area.

This event is unfortunately far from being the first of its kind in the region. North Kivu is regularly plagued by outbreaks of violence, largely fueled by land disputes and ethnic tensions.

These tragedies underscore the importance of the work of civil society in the region, especially those fighting for the rights of local communities. Authorities should ensure that these voices are not silenced by violence
