“Restricted humanitarian aid for the displaced in Goma: an alarming situation that requires immediate action”

Limited access to humanitarian aid: a worrying situation for the displaced in the Goma region

In the region of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, many displaced people face difficulties in accessing humanitarian aid. In the sites of Bulengo, Lushagala, Kanyaruchinya, Eloime, Munigi and Rusayo, the displaced populations are having difficulty obtaining food and receiving assistance from NGOs. Gentil Karabuka, president of civil society in the Kisigari region, expresses his concern about this situation.

According to Karabuka, many displaced people have lived in these camps for more than two years and face daily food insecurity. They have nothing to eat and are forced to beg to survive. Karabuka denounces the fact that some NGOs treat assistance as a favour, when it should be considered a right for displaced people in a situation of suffering.

This worrying situation also raises a broader question: that of peace and security in the region. Karabuka calls on the government to assume its responsibilities and work to bring peace to the areas concerned. He points out that when everyone can go home and go about their daily activities, it reduces dependence on humanitarian aid.

It is also important to note that the situation remains tense in several areas of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo territories, due to clashes between local militiamen and M23 rebels. This instability accentuates the difficulties of access to humanitarian aid and worsens the situation of the displaced.

Faced with these challenges, it is essential that the authorities take concrete measures to restore peace, ensure the security of the populations and facilitate access to humanitarian aid
