“Illegally exported gold deprives the Congolese state of millions of dollars in Ituri province.”

Illegal mining and gold export fraud continue to be a major problem in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. According to mining actors and local notables, about 80% of the gold produced in the territories of Djugu and Mambasa escapes the control of the Congolese State, resulting in significant financial losses for the region.

This revelation was made during a meeting focused on gold governance in the region. Participants noted that the amount of gold fraudulently exported to foreign countries, especially neighboring countries, was of concern. They also highlighted the link between this illegal activity and the financing of armed groups present in the region.

According to Tibert Kajemba, mining expert in the Madini Kwa maendeleo project, it is essential that the Congolese government step up efforts to combat this fraud. In particular, it encourages the continuation of military operations against combatants and the acceleration of the program to demilitarize mining sites.

This issue was discussed during a two-day meeting, bringing together mining stakeholders, representatives of civil society and notables from the Djugu and Mambasa region. This meeting, supported by MONUSCO, is part of the implementation of the recommendations adopted during the technical secretariat of the Nairobi process.

It is essential to fight against illegal mining and gold export fraud in Ituri province. In addition to depriving the Congolese state of significant financial resources, this activity also fuels armed groups and perpetuates instability in the region. It is therefore essential that concrete measures be taken to strengthen gold governance and put an end to this harmful practice for the province and its inhabitants
