Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa: When cultural diversity shines despite political tensions

The Games of La Francophonie: a major cultural event in Kinshasa

In a few hours, Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, will be the scene of the 9th Games of La Francophonie. For 10 days, thousands of artists and athletes from 88 member countries of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) will gather to celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity.

This event goes well beyond a simple sporting or cultural competition. It is a festival that allows member countries to share their traditions, customs, arts and unique cultural heritage. Delegations from member countries have already been present in Kinshasa for several days, ready to offer artistic performances, dance performances, art exhibitions and much more.

The holding of these games is of great importance for the Democratic Republic of Congo which wishes to restore its image through a successful organization of the event. The Congolese Government, despite the challenges of securing, building infrastructure and financing, is determined to project the image of a stable and attractive country.

However, the arrival of the Secretary General of the OIF, Louise Mushikiwabo, raises some questions because of the recent tensions between Kinshasa and Kigali. Despite the assurances of the Congolese Government as to the apolitical nature of La Francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo declared that she had not received any formal invitation from the organizers and would therefore not be present in Kinshasa.

However, the presence of Caroline St-Hilaire, administrator of the OIF, underlines the importance of maintaining the bonds of fraternity and cooperation within La Francophonie. Indeed, despite political differences, the French language remains a common base that unites peoples and promotes mutual understanding and respect for cultures.

The Games of La Francophonie will offer visitors and participants a unique opportunity to discover the richness of French-speaking cultures through sports, musical, artistic and literary performances. Renowned Congolese artists and stars of French-speaking music will follow one another on stage during the opening ceremony which promises to be grandiose.

Beyond the political tensions in the background, this event will be a true celebration of the diversity and cultural richness of La Francophonie. He will also leave a valuable legacy for Congolese youth by promoting the values of sport, culture, inclusion and cooperation
