The Francophonie Games, a flagship event for French-speaking cooperation, will soon take place in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, recent controversy surrounds the participation of the Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo.
Due to the tumultuous relations between the DRC and Rwanda, Louise Mushikiwabo announced that she would not participate in the Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa. Tensions between the two countries center on Kinshasa’s accusation that Rwanda supports the M23 rebellion that has plagued eastern DRC since last year.
Initially, the organizers of the Francophone Games had confirmed the presence of Louise Mushikiwabo at the opening ceremony. However, the secretary general’s spokesperson said that the formal invitation was never received and therefore Louise Mushikiwabo decided not to travel to Kinshasa.
Instead, she will be represented by the administrator of the OIF, Caroline St-Hilaire. The spokesperson stressed that Louise Mushikiwabo’s main objective is for the Games to go well and be a success for Francophone youth.
This controversy highlights political tensions and regional rivalries in Central Africa. The Games of La Francophonie, which are meant to be a symbol of unity and cooperation, are unfortunately affected by these political disagreements.
Despite this notable absence, the Francophonie Games in Kinshasa will continue with the participation of athletes and artists from French-speaking countries around the world. This is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity and richness of La Francophonie.
In conclusion, Louise Mushikiwabo’s decision not to attend the Jeux de la Francophonie in Kinshasa due to political tensions between the DRC and Rwanda testifies to the persistent challenges of Francophone cooperation in the region. However, the event will continue and provide a platform to promote sport, culture and Francophone solidarity
