“Meeting between the UN and Angola to promote peace in eastern DRC”

The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, visited the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of a regional tour. In particular, he met Angolan President João Lourenço in Luanda, with whom he discussed the joint efforts between Angola and the United Nations to promote peace and security in eastern DRC, in accordance with the Roadmap. of Luanda for the pacification of that country.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix also discussed the possibility of deploying a military contingent of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) to the DRC to oversee the quartering of members of the M23 armed group. The United Nations has indicated its availability to contribute to the establishment of this Angolan military contingent.

This initiative is considered to be very positive for the pacification efforts of the DRC, which is experiencing unrest in the east of the country, particularly linked to the armed groups active there. This meeting between Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the Angolan President made it possible to strengthen collaboration between the two countries and to advance solutions for peace and security in the region.
